This is a summary of standard dimensions for Australian kitchens. Having standard dimensions certainly makes life easier for beginners and kitchen designers alike!
baseboard height
The standard baseboard height is 150 mm.. The height range can be between 100mm and 200mm. The depth of the plinth (from the front of the cabinet frame to the floor, excluding the door) is 50 mm. (See Fig. 1)
Standard kitchen counter height
Recommended standard kitchen counter height is 900mm (+/- 20mm). This is the distance between the finished floor and the top of the bench. However, the working table height can be in the range of 850mm to 1050mm. (See Fig. 2)
Ideal desk height
The ideal bench height (relative to your own height) is just below your elbow!
A good rule of thumb for finding your ideal workbench height is to make a fist and place it under your bent elbow. The lowest part of the handle is the ideal worktable height!
table depth
The most common depth for work tables in Australia today is 600mm deep. (Older kitchens usually have a standard depth of 450mm).

The protrusion of the edge of the table is 20 mm from the front face (door/drawer) of the floor cabinet.
Standard table thickness
The most common countertop material is laminate and its standard thickness is 33mm.. It is made of 32 mm thick MDF or chipboard and a 0.8 mm thick piece of glued laminate.
Obviously, the thickness of the worktable varies, as it depends on the type of material used. Other tabletop materials include granite, limestone, or engineered stones like Caesarstone. They are generally 20mm thick slabs and for thicker tops the edge is built with 20mm more.
- Laminated top thickness = 33mm
- Thickness of granite/limestone = 20mm (or 40mm with false edge)
- Caesarstone (engineered stone) = 20mm (or 40mm with built-in edge)
You need to be careful when working with kitchen worktop heights around 1050mm high. Appliances like dishwashers will end up having a lot of space between them and the work table. You can increase the height of the dishwasher by placing a drawer underneath or placing a drawer on top.
Standard height of floor cabinet
The standard height of the floor cabinet is 720 mm (+1/-4 mm). This does not include the surfboard. Ideally, the depth of the cabinet from the floor should not exceed 600 mm (handles excluded). Standard depth of floor cabinet is 580mm including door thickness.
Standard dimensions for standard or DIY base (floor) cabinets are 720 mm high by 560 mm deep (without door). Floor cabinet widths generally increase in 100 or 150 mm increments (see Fig. 3).
The maximum door width for a base cabinet is 600 mm. This is due to the loading of the weight of the door on the door hinges. If the door were wider, the doors would tend to sag under the weight. You can fix this by placing two hinges on top of the door (one hinge below the other).

Standard kitchen door opening size
The standard kitchen door opening size (distance between doors) is 3mm.
For example: If a single door cabinet is 500 mm wide, the door width will be 497 mm (500-3 mm).
If a two-door cabinet is 900 mm wide, the door width is 447 mm ((900-6 mm)/2).
The door clearance between the bottom of the work table and the top of the cabinet door is also 3 mm.
Standard dimensions for stock/DIY wall cabinets
Standard wall cabinet height is 720 mm (+1/-4 mm). Ideally, the depth of the wall cabinet should not exceed 350 mm (handles excluded). There must be a minimum clearance of 280 mm at the rear of the cabinet. Personally, I prefer a minimum clearance of 300mm to be able to store large diameter boards easily.
Standard dimensions for stock or DIY wall cabinets are 720mm high by 300mm deep (without the door). As for floor cupboards, wall cupboard widths usually increase in 100 mm or 150 mm increments (see Fig. 4).

Standard tall cabinet height
Standard high cabinet height (pantry, wall oven, etc.) is 2073 mm (+/- 20 mm)). See figure 5. The height is determined by adding the height of the floor cabinet, the thickness of the work table, the height of the splashback and the height of the wall cabinet (720 mm + 33 mm + 600 mm + 720 mm = 2073 mm +/- 20mm). The standard depth of the tall cabinet is 600 mm.
standard kitchen height
Standard kitchen height is 2223 mm (+/- 20 mm). The height is determined by adding the baseboard height, floor unit height, worktable thickness, backsplash height, and wall unit height:
150 mm + 720 mm + 33 mm + 600 mm + 720 mm = 2223 mm +/- 20 mm. (Ver figura 5)
Backsplash height (on wall cabinets)
The standard kitchen backsplash height is 600 mm.. The minimum height of the dashboard is 450 mm. If you have a wall unit over a sink, there must be a minimum splash height of 600mm between the top of the sink and the bottom of the wall unit.
Height of hood above gas stove
The minimum height of the extractor hood above a gas stove is 650 mm.. Most manufacturers recommend a minimum height of 700mm to 750mm.
Standard refrigerator space dimensions
Standard fridge space is 900mm wide x 1800mm high x 600mm deep.
A long time ago, it used to be a commonly accepted practice in the Australian kitchen industry to leave a standard refrigeration space of 1800mm high x 900mm wide x 600mm deep.
This "standard fridge space" would accommodate most types of top mounted fridges available in Australia, as this was the most popular type of fridge at the time.
Unfortunately there is no such thing as astandard fridge size.
Standard Oven/Wall Oven Dimensions
Standard countertop oven size is 600mm wide x 600mm high. The countertop oven can be used as a built-in oven (and vice versa). Pizza oven types are usually 900mm wide x 600mm high.
Wall oven dimensions are typically 600 mm wide x 600 mm high or 600 mm wide x 900 mm high. Occasionally, wall ovens can be 900 mm wide x 600 mm high (eg pizza ovens).
Freestanding oven dimensions
Standard sizes of cookware such as freestanding ovens or ranges (gas or electric) come in five standard widths.

These are nominal dimensions (i.e. not exact but very close) as different appliance manufacturers have different standards.
Standard dishwasher dimensions
Standard dishwasher dimensions are 598mm wide x 600mm deep x 820mm to 870mm high(using height adjustable feet).
Standard dishwasher cavity dimensions are 600 mm wide x 600 mm deep x 870 mm high.
Having standardized dimensions certainly makes life easier for kitchen designers, as it provides a solid and workable framework for developing an efficient and safe design.
